Our History

Thompson Chapel Missionary Baptist Church

Organized 1899

Thompson Chapel was organized April 16, 1899 as a mission from First Baptist Church in Pulaski, Tennessee. A council was formed from members of the First Baptist Church in Pulaski and New Zion Baptist Church. Dr. A.J. Holt was moderator of the council.

There were 36 charter members as follows: W.A. Street, Mrs. Mollie Street, John Braden, Mrs. Annie Braden, John Kirk, Oscar Kirk, T. J. Kirk, Mrs. Julia Kirk, J.M. Aymett, W.E. Creek, Mrs. Frances Creek, R.P. Newton, Mrs. Mollie Newton, Mrs. Frances Newton, Miss Fridonia Newton, A.M. Rose, Mrs. Savanna Rose, Mrs. Lena Bunch, W.F. Tarpley, Mrs. W.F. Tarpley, Miss Lottie May Tarpley, Miss Mary Kate Tarpley, Mrs. Odelia Parr, G.B. Uselton, Miss Lillian George, G.W. Palmer, J.H. Sewell, Mrs. A.E. Sewell, J.C. Moore, Mrs. Mary Moore, Rev. C. Kincaid, Mrs. Annie Kincaid, T.J. Johnson, and J.H. Johnson.

A council was formed from First Baptist Church and New Zion Baptist Church. Rev. T.T. Thompson was chosen as clerk of the council. After this Dr. A.J. Holt read the Declaration of Faith as found in Rendeltons manual commenting on each article separately. The new Church accepted these as their doctrine and also as the church doctrine. The council recognized them as a regular missionary Baptist church, after which the doors of the church were opened, and Mrs. Alice Cooper was received on statement, and Mrs. Aline Kincaid was received on her experience of Grace for baptism. Mrs. W.F. Tarpley was chosen clerk at the meeting on April 20, 1899.

The following trustees were elected: J.M. Aymett, A.M. Rose, W.A. Street, J.R. Johnson, and W.F. Tarpley, who were instructed to encourage the people to build a church house. Rev. W.C. McPherson was called to take charge as pastor for two Sunday afternoons a month and $75.00 a month was pledged for his support. A church building committee was elected by the church. A.M. Rose,W.H. Street, and J.W. Aymett were instructed to raise funds and secure a lot and build as soon as practical. W.A. Street gave a lot and pledged to build a house as soon as lumber was on the ground. The church was finished in 1900.

The pastors that followed Rev. W.C. McPherson were Rev. R.A. Fitzgerald, Rev. S.W. Kendrick, Rev. F.M. Cupton, Rev. Conail Smith, Rev. J.M. Irvin, Rev. Yager, Rev. D.T. Foust, Rev. Smith, Rev. L.M. Laten, Rev. M.J. Taylor, Dr. Franklin, Rev. Johns, Rev. Lewis Ferrell, Rev. Braxton Sams, Rev. E.R. Gatlin, Rev. Mac Pinkleton, Rev. Bobby Campbell, Rev. Max Love, Rev. Jerry Stuber, Rev. Edd Burrow, Rev. Leo Bunt, Rev. Elmer Howell, Rev. Marvin Nelson, Rev. Darrell Lingerfeltner, and Rev. Johnny Garrett.

The original room was used until 1854 when Sunday school rooms were built. Rev. Stuber and Raymond Burrow were the organizers. In the sixties the floor was carpeted and water and restrooms were added, as well as heating and cooling units and pews. In 1986 a fellowship hall and kitchen was added to the back of the building. In 1999 the church voted to build a new church, adjacent to the existing building. The church began saving money and construction soon began on a two-story block/log structure. It would have 8 Sunday school rooms, Worship upstairs in the log top structure, and a sound room above the sanctuary.

It was dedicated and occupied on June 3, 2001. Many people have come to know Jesus through the services held in each building. Since then many things have happened. In 2016, 10 acres were purchased at the corner of Highway 64 and Highway 31 on the bypass. An architect was hired to draw a master plan and provide drawings for a relocation there. These drawings are located on the back wall of the sanctuary. The original building fell into disrepair and had to be torn down in 2019. A used doublewide mobile home was purchased and renovated to house a new fellowship hall, kitchen, and restrooms. This building was occupied in the fall of 2020.

All these things have been done through the help of Almighty God and many people working together in the Spirit of Love. We invite each and every one of you to enjoy your time with us and if you’re looking for a church home, we would love to have you join with us!

Our services are: Sunday school 8:45 am, Worship 10:00 am, and Wednesday night prayer/Bible study 6:30 pm.

To God Be The Glory! Great things He has done!
